About my work

Birthday belly buttons 2020: my latest work is an installation of photos of navels, see page Jarige navels. The photos, ranging from 1 to 80, were taken exactly on the day the model reached the corresponding age, i.e. on her birthday. The first scar that every person suffers at birth is the navel. Most scars fade with time, but the navel does not, it remains visible for life. Can you tell how old someone is by her navel? My search for the last navel for this work has caught nationwide attention on radio and television (see page In the media).

A recurrent theme in my other work is recycling, reuse of textile from the charity shop: sculptures made out of old blankets, paintings on curtain material from the 1970s, flippers made out of an old coat of seal fur. Used textile is often still beautiful and very much a product of its time: the design of an old towel can remind me of the smell of the sea in the village where I grew up.

Another recurrent theme are the human shortcomings. We poor wretches do our utmost, but we fail again and again. Often, I can laugh it off: to me, humour is a good remedy. This humour can be found in my work, especially in my drawings and embroidery. I love contrasts, oppositions and therefore I like to combine things that do not belong together; there often is a collage-like element in my work.
